WELCOME to Tim's Tips - Selections for main Melbourne race meetings by former Herald Sun sports journalist Tim Habel. He is now a contributor to The Age so his tips for major city meetings will be in The Age formguide.
CAULFIELD SATURDAY AUGUST 19. Rail out 3m. Track good 4.
DOMINO VITALE 1, Dulverton 2, Hell Or Highwater 3, Sea The Sparkle 4
Domino Vitale was allowed to get out of her ground but still ran on well at Flemington. If she can track Hell Or Highwater and put the pressure on can score at good odds.
OREGON'S DAY 1, Written Era 2, Lyuba 3, Modern Wonder 4
Good mares race, Oregon's Day ran on strongly resuming last February behind the smart Fuhyrk and has trialled well.
THEANSWERMYFRIEND 1, Land Of Plenty 2, Quilista 3, Fursa 4
Theanswermyfriend is destined for Group success this spring, this is short of his best distance but he easily led winning a Caulfield 800m jump out and is worth speculating at good odds.
AMOVATIO 1, Big Duke 2, Rhythm To Spare 3, Onpicalo 4
D Oliver returns on Amovatio which is a big plus, the gelding is not easy to ride with a tendency to hang in.
TULIP 1, Catchy 2,Crown Witness 3, Arctic Angel 4
There is little between Tulip and Catchy and both trialled well in the same event at Cranbourne. At the odds preference for Tulip who will settle in front of her stablemate, close the door with the quinella.
JUKEBOX 1, Cliff's Edge 2, Kobayashi 3, Lone Eagle 4
Unbeaten Jukebox was a Blue Diamond prospect before feet issues finished his preparation. Looked good in a Caulfield jump out. Cliff's Edge is untapped, will race on pace and has to be respected.
BLACK HEART BART 1, Tosen Stardom 2, Hartnell 3, Humidor 4
As long as the rain stays away Black Heart Bart can keep his unbeaten Caulfield 1400m record in intact. His Achilles is a wet track, so anything worse than a slow 5 will be a danger sign.
VEGA MAGIC 1, Brave Smash 2, Chocolate Holic 3, Lord Da Vinci 4
Big spruik on former Japanese galloper Brave Smash who has been working with Weir's topliners and holding his own. But he will need to be good to beat Vega Magic, first-up Goodwood winner and fresh again.
HERE TO THERE 1, Divine Mr Artie 2, Ozi Choice 3, Portman 4
Tough closer to the quaddie, the load up leg. Here To There has drawn barriers 11, 13, 13 of late but this time occupies the rails and can box seat instead of tracking wide as he did so bravely at Flemington. Ozi Choice led and battled on well and Divine Mr Artie was held up and ran on well, Portman was plain, tongue tie goes on, while Revolving Door, who ran last in the same race, had a heart issue. Watch on former Argentinian Tahanee now with Weir, looked good in a Ballarat jump out.
BEST BETS: Black Heart Bart, Amovatio. VALUE BET: Here To There.
THE $20 FLEXI QUADDIE1st leg: 4, 82nd leg: 33rd leg: 1, 114th leg: 3, 6, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18For a $20 outlay you would receive 71.42 per cent of a $1 dividend.
