PAFC Appoints New Coaches

Ashley Mills is the new coach of VAFA Division 3 2011 premier team Prahran Assumption.

Mills, 31, beat a select field of contenders for the post vacated by Leigh Stafford who stood down to concentrate on his financial planning business.

A varied playing and coaching career  and a highly professional dossier  presented at his interview made Mills the unanimous choice of club coaching panel Fab Maya, Kevin Matherson, Paul Taylor and Jesse Silver.

Sidelined as a player in 2011 because of a shoulder injury, Mills coached Therry Penola Under 19s from three wins in 2010 at Under 18 level to a grand final berth this season.

Highlights of Mills’ playing career included being a member of Therry Penola’s C Grade 2000 premiership team, a best and fairest at North Coburg Saints in 1998, captaining North Coburg for 4 seasons, captaining the Essendon District Football League B-Grade representative team in 2008 and spending one season with VFL Coburg in 1999.

His coaching CV began as a playing assistant coach with North Coburg from 2004-06, North Coburg senior coach in 2007, a playing assistant coach at Northern Saints (nee North Coburg) in 2008 and playing assistant coach at Therry Penola in 2009-10.

Mills' assistant will be Zane Moylan, 28, who also worked with him at Therry Penola last season.

Mills lists his strengths as being highly organised, a good verbal and written communicator with a professional approach to the game.

He lists his coaching philosophy as complete commitment to perpetual improvement – for players, coaches and in turn the team.

His formula for success is centred on continual daily improvement, sustained effort and individual discipline, leading to individual development on and off field, therein leading to ultimate team success.

A teacher at Penola Catholic College and winner of the 2011 Hume City Council’s Teacher’s Scholarship in the Secondary School category, Mills will have a meet the players night at Spectrum On Chapel at 6.30 pm on Thursday November 17.

First pre-season training session is planned for Monday November 21.

Season 2012 Underway

To all PAFC players for Season 2012,

I hope this letter finds you well and you’ve started the New Year positively. Please see an outline of our post-Christmas schedule over the page.

After a relatively light pre-Christmas load for the bulk of our group, and both the excitement and brain strain of 2011 nothing but a memory, now is the time when we need a complete commitment from all players on our list to get themselves physically fit and hence prepared to play their best footy in Season 2012.

Over the coming 12 weeks, we will be following a conditioning program designed by Pelly that will ensure we are amongst the fittest outfits in the VAFA this year; the key is that every individual makes the commitment to attend each session and train at intensity to ensure we are indeed superior to our opponents and we fulfil our athletic potential. In order to be successful at a higher grade this year and inturn reach the upper echelon of the VAFA, we must be physically and mentally fitter, harder at the football, more disciplined, more skilful, team-oriented, structured and passionate – our pre-season training will aim to ensure we meet these objectives; what is key now is you commit to making this objective become a reality.

We have chosen to schedule two sessions a week rather than three so we can maximise attendance on both Monday and Wednesday nights, and thus every session is a compulsory one. If you are unable to attend for whatever reason, all players are asked to text, email or phone me; I will notify the playing group RE: your whereabouts via our whiteboard. As a group we can live with players missing training due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. family, work commitments, etc.), but not players simply not turning up.

Please note that we have included two Saturday morning sessions in our program (Saturday 18th February and Saturday 3rd March) which are also compulsory for all players.

Important dates to note:

  • Saturday 17th March and Sunday 18th March – preseason camp at Assumption College Kilmore; compulsory for all players
  • Saturday 24th March – Practice Match One versus Old Paradians (away)
  • Saturday 31st March – Practice Match Two versus Williamstown CYMS (away)
  • Saturday 14th April – Practice Match Three versus Violet Town (home)
  • Saturday 21st April – Round One versus Bulleen Templestowe (home)

“Controlling what we can control” will be a key focus of our group in 2012, and this theme is particularly pertinent for this coming period of training. Making disciplined decisions regarding your attendance at training, your effort whilst there,  following instructions at training, your diet, your training away from the club, your water intake, your attitude to working on your areas of weakness, are all things you can control and, in turn, impact positively on those around you.  Focus now on “controlling the controllables” so you are positioned to play the best footy of your career which will in turn help us achieve our goals as a team over the coming 9 months.

2012 is going to be an exciting year of growth and improvement for Prahran Assumption FC; be passionate about embarking on this journey with your friends, invigorated about the challenges that lie ahead and committed to making our football club the best club in the VAFA.

Sincerely,

Ashley Mills

PREMIERS AND CHAMPIONS

PREMIERS and champions- what more emphatic statement could a team make than Prahran Assumption’s demolition of Monash Gryphons at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham, on Sunday.
The only team in the seven divisions of the VAFA to go through the season undefeated, Prahran Assumption won all 20 games and the most important of all in Division 3 of 2011 by 73 points.
A red letter day for the Two Blues was spoilt only by an eight point defeat for the gallant Reserves.
But promotion to Division 2 and the cherished premiership cup was still a day to savour.
Full credit to our opponent Monash Gryphons- any thoughts this would be a romp were quickly dispelled in a ferocious first quarter.
The tackling and pressure from both teams was outstanding but the Blues withstood the onslaught and a one point deficit from the first quarter kicking against a 2-3 goal breeze was more than passable.
But Monash showed why it has been promoted two divisions in successive years when they came out steaming against the breeze.
Deep into the second quarter the margin was a far from comfortable 12 points . Then a curling on the run goal from back pocket Ben Furness and Josh “Cookie’’ Ancrum gave the Blues some breathing space.
At the half-time break it was confirmed heroic ruckman Aran O’Hare was ‘subbed out’ with concussion so the Blues were one man short.
But up stood skipper Adam Sleight.
Quiet by his lofty standards in the first-half at centre half-forward, he dominated ruck duels and was impassable with his marking in the back half.
Kicking into the breeze in the third quarter was always going to be the game breaker.
A series of 25m penalties against the Blues conspired to keep Monash in the game.
But a six goals to two for the Blues was a telling stat and by three quarter-time the fat lady was ready to sing.
But Monash set some heart flutters among the Two Blues supporters with the first two goals of the last term.
Surely not... then Monash made a crucial mistake kicking out from a point on the full.
Enter Chappy who duly slotted the ‘gift’.
A Mick Bremner handball to Ash Parsons for a goal within 60 seconds and the game was over.
Seven goals to one in the final stages turned the game into a rout.
Full credit to coach Leigh Stafford who joined the club in 2004 as a playing coach, then football manager and this year as non-playing coach and now has his first flag.
He has a talented list but to go through a season undefeated is an outstanding achievement and he was also pivotal in the machinations of the joint venture with the famous football nursery Assumption College.
There is a famous line from England’s famous World War II Prime Minister Winston Churchill about the conflict- ‘’this is not the end, this is the beginning of the end’.
For Prahran Assumption this is not the start, this is the beginning of the start of a climb up the grades in the VAFA.
PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 4-3  10-7  16-7  25-9 (159)
MONASH GRYPHONS 4-4   6-7 8-12   12-14 (86).
Goals. Parsons 6, Edmunds, Chapman, Maya 3, Sleight, Musster, James 2, Furness, Pell, Ancrum, L Northway.
Best. Parsons (VAFA best afield medallist), Chapman, James, Musster, Furness, Pell, Dempsey, Donahoo.
QUARTER BY QUARTER
FIRST QUARTER
Prahran Assumption lost the toss, kicking into a 2-3 goal breeze. First two goals to the Gryphons.
First goal to Edmunds, then a Musster handball to Pell for another.
James great mark and goal, then Parsons mark and goal. Another James mark on the sire, kick just failed to go the distance.
SECOND QUARTER
Monash missed three successive set shorts. Then a great clearance from Chapman for a Musster goal on the run. Prahran Assumption hits the front for the first time 5-3 to 4-6.
Musster pass to Chapman and another goal. Monash quickly reply then Parsons on the run with a quick answer. James took another great mark and goal to go further ahead.
Furness from the back pocket slotted a long curling goal then Ancrum from a free for a handy four goal lead.
THIRD QUARTER
Sleight into the ruck for the concussed O’Hare. First goal to Monash from a kick-in error.
Maya replied from the goal square. McIntyre made some telling intercepts in defence. Musster’s dazzling speed resulted in a push in the back for a free and goal.
A 25m penalty against Parsons saw a Monash reply. James marked in goal square handball to Maya for a goal.
Two posters from Monash crucial misses, then Northway a left foot snap from the pack.
Cristoforo to Edumunds for a goal and Edmunds to Parsons and courtesy of a 50m penalty another goal.
FOURTH QUARTER
First two goals to Monash. Then Chapman slotted a free from a kick-out on the full from a point.
Bremner handball to Parsons goal within 60 seconds and this is game over.
Monash goals but the floodgates are about to open.
Sleight, Maya, Chapman, then a Monash goal.
Then Parsons, Edmunds, Parsons again and finally Sleight again goal in an emphatic statement.
PLAYER BY PLAYER
BEN FURNESS
Fly- in player from Adelaide late in the season because of work commitments. Slotted into back pocket as though he owned it, and his run and carry was an outstanding as it has been all season.
STEPHEN “SUBA’ MCINTYRE
Best afield in last year’s Goulburn Valley League grand final and you can see why. Fierce attack on the ball and after a few early hiccups outstanding in defence.
SCOTT ADAMSON
Son of a renowed Collingwood hardman Lee Adamson, and plays the game just the same.
Solid as a rock early when some were shaky, always put his body on the line.
BLAYNE DEMSPEY
Break out season on the half back flank. His poise, marking and disposal were again highlights. Big chance for a first three in the B&F.
JACK MATHERSON
Key defender who has rarely lowered his colours all season. Steady as usual, son of a past president and played with the passion that showed the club means a lot to him.
ED MACDONALD
Started with the club in the Under 12s, so a great success story for the club. Premiership dream seemed in tatters with a late season serious ankle injury. But returned for the second-semi and as usual his dash from the backline was telling.
MATT PELL.  Fitness guru with the skills to match. Telling delivery with either foot , speed and strength hard to combat.
ASH PARSONS
Best afield voted with Tony Fellowes Medal by VAFA and righly so. Returned after a four week break with a hamstring injury. Six goals from half-forward, wing, on-ball. Wore the famous Prahran No 10 carried by Kevin Sheedy, Graeme Yeats etc. Lost the first three grand finals of his career, this was never going to be a fourth. A gun.
JOSH ANCRUM
Players player in the second-semi. Not as dominant today but played his role in tight that many would not have seen. “Recruiter’’ of the year.
JAMES MUSSTER
Hutchinson Medallist as best and fairest in the competition and showed why. Blistering pace, kicked two goals , assisted in several more. Under 19 graduate, destined for a great career.
ADAM SLEIGHT
Captain, multiple best and fairest second leading goal kicker in the competition from centre half-forward. Quiet in the first half, dominated in second half when switched to the ruck and marked the ball at will.
RYAN COSTIN
Key lock down player and a coach favourite. Unobtrusive, rarely beaten in one on ones.
TIM MAYA
Son of the president and eight goals in two finals says he more than paid his way. Always a threat with his pace and love of a goal. Uncanny knack of being on the end of a forward move. Another U19s graduate.
PETER CRISTORO
Kicked 10 during the season and the classiest spearhead in the competition, but with a haul of 25 on grand final day went goalless. Much more effective than that, though. Assisted in several goals and always a threat.
ISAAC EDMUNDS
Returned from a hamstring injury after a four weeks break and kicked three goals so more than justified his inclusion. Always a danger with his marking and goal kicking ability.
ARAN O’HARE
Lion- hearted young ruckman who carried the burden of big man duels all season. What we feared may be a weakness became a strength. Concussed and ‘subbed’ off at half-time.
PAUL DONAHOO
Heart and soul of the mid-field. Tough in the clinches, clean hands always pushing the ball our way. Leadership with a capital L.
JOSH CHAPMAN
Last game with the club before returning to Portland and what a farewell!. Hard at it when the going was at its toughest. Kicked three as a bonus. We will miss you big time.!
DAN JAMES
Best game for the season. Marking was back to his ‘buckets’ best. Two goals crucial early, more than held his own in the ruck.
LEIGH NORTHWAY
Team of the Decade captain but a controversial selection because of being sidelined by a posterior cruciate  knee injury mid-season.  First game since round 8 was the Reserves second-semi. Rusty early, but showed what this meant to him with a left snap from a pack in the third term and last quarter really warmed up.
MICHAEL BREMNER
Never stops running and competing. Ball handling skills were a season high. Another son of a past president and you can see why how he attacked the ball.
ASH WIGGINS
Started on interchange but what a luxury!. Tough, strong, great disposal. Key member of the best mid-field rotation in the competition.
COACH
LEIGH STAFFORD
Best team, best game plan. Has matured as a coach.  Introduced leadership team concept under Rich Maloney which proved an inspired move.
Laid down the game plan pre season and set superior fitness as a benchmark. Vital part of the success of the Prahran Assumption joint venture.

RESERVES LOSE A TOUGH ONE

HOW can a team win three quarters on the scoreboard and lose?
That was the question Prahran Assumption Reserves players and coaching staff were asking after a frustrating grand final day at the office on Sunday.
Hot favourites after losing just the first two games of the year, what some failed to factor in was the fact UHSV was able to drop back senior players and boost its playing stocks.
A first quarter lead on nine points was barely passable.
And so it proved when UHSV launched a second quarter onslaught of 7-6 to 1-1.
The game was all but over but gradually the superior fitness became a factor and the Blues worked their way back into the game.
Craig Northway was outstanding switched on ball and at three quarter-time the margin was a gettable 16 points, even though kicking against the breeze.
Coach Rob Oliver switched players in a bid to find the right mix and despite  the first goal going to man mountain and and man-of-the-match Mitch Sweeney the Blues responded with goals to Michael Scicluna, Josh Taylor and Nathan Costin.
UHSV was out on its feet but the siren sounded too soon.
PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 5-1 6-2 10-5 13- 6 (84)
UHSV                               3-3 10-9 12-9 13-14 (92)
Goals, Ellis, N Costin 2, Brooks, Taylor, Giansiracusa, Booth, Oliver, C Northway, Bourke, Scicluna, Pepperill.

Captain Adam Sleight leadsthe seniors onto the field after the Reserves 2nd Semi Final win

Semi Final Win puts Prahran Assumtion Back in Division 2

NINETEEN wins in a row and promotion to VAFA Division 2 is satisfying but now only a premiership will truly satisfy Prahran Assumption’s quest for the perfect season 2011 after Saturday’s second semi-final triumph over Yarra Valley.
As coach Leigh Stafford hammered home to his players after the game the club has won promotion for the first time since Prahran Amateur Football Club formed in 1999 but only a premiership on Saturday fortnight will define the season.
“Today our style of play ground them into submission,’’ Stafford said.
And so it proved as a 7-3 to one point final quarter turned what was expected to be an arm wrestle into a rout.
With the defeat of Banyule in Division1 last Saturday week, Prahran Assumption went into Saturday’s match the only undefeated team in the VAFA.
At windswept St Bernard’s, Prahran Assumption lost a crucial toss and kicked into a howling five goal advantage gale.
The quarter time scoreline of 5-3 to Yarra Valley 5-4 set the tone for the day, as the Two Blues combine’s relentless attack on the ball and superior skills shone out.
A 7-6 to 2- 0 second quarter extended the margin to 36 points and by game’s end the margin had ballooned to 63 points.
In a great day for the club the Reserves also won by 57 points setting the scene for possible twin premierships.
Prahran Assumption’s goal kicking stars were spearhead Peter Cristoforo and forward pocket Tim Maya who both snared five goals apiece.
In defence Blayne Dempsey’s marking and disposal were a highlight, ‘Scuba’ McIntyre and Scott Adamson’s attack on the ball were inspirational, Jack Matherson was all but impassable while Ben Furness and Ed Macdonald provided the run and carry.
Young ruckman Aaron O’Hare set the tone for the match with a bone crunching tackle in the opening minutes and was the dominant big man on the ground.
In a good sign for the club, star players, captain Adam Sleight and Division 3 medallist James Musster were solid contributors but not as dominant and usual.
Add gun on-baller Ash Parsons and key forward Isaac Edmunds who will be fit to return from injury and the signs are all rosy for the Blues.
QUARTER BY QUARTER
1st quarter
Yarra Valley goaled within the first two minutes, but Tim Maya soon replied. Goals to Cristoforo and Craig Northway put the Blues in front. Then Yarra Valley added two more goals before Cristoforo and Northway again goaled to draw within a point.
2nd quarter
A long bomb from O’Hare, then goals to “Chopper’’ Donahoo, Cristoforo, Maya (twice), Ancrum and Sleight in the space of 15 minutes with the wind split the game open. A lapse in concentration in time-on saw Yarra Valley kick two goals to stay in the game.
3rd quarter
With the game on the line Yarra Valley came out attacking. The first three goals of the quarter made it five in a row and it was game on. A Sleight tap to Musster and a pass to Cristoforo provided a much needed goal.
Then Musster handballed to Donahoo for another two minutes later and a 19 point lead coming home with a gale was a match winning position.
4th quarter
Cristoforo, Musster and Maya goaled in the first eight minutes and it was game over. Yarra Valley’s sole score for the quarter, a point, came at the 29 minute mark.

PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 5-3 12-10 14-11 21-14 (140)
YARRA VALLEY 5-4 7-4 11-10 11-11 (77)
Goals, Cristoforo, Maya 5, C Northway 3, Donahoo, Musster 2, Sleight, O’Hare, Giansiracusa, Ancrum.
Best. O’Hare, Matherson, R Costin, Chapman, Donahoo, Chapman , Ancrum, Dempsey

Reserves lead the way into the Grand Final

Prahran Assumption Reserves made their way into the Division 3 Reserves Grand Final with an emphatic win against Yarra Valley at the Snakepit on Saturday.

With a howling northerly blowing straight down the ground and losing the toss and kicking against the win the first quarter was always going to be interesting. Yarra Valley struck first with a quick goal. Both teams playing a hard man to man style of football and there were no "beg your pardons". However the combine held their own against a stiff breeze and at the end of the quarter the combine held a narrow 2 pt lead. A highlight of the quarter was the goal of Tom Candy, bursting away from his defender to slide one through from 40m.

The second quarter was as hard fought as the first but the blues opened up a solid lead kicking 4 goals 8 behinds to 1 goal. Young Josh Taylor was in outstanding form on the wing, with Nathan Shipplee and Adam Stewart leading the defence. Burke and Pitts were among better players for the quarter. Highlight of the quarter was Adam Stewarts run from half back and 60 metre goal on the run, a pearler!

With the wind howling the Prahran Assumption boys met their opponents head on in the third quarter. Yarra Valley came out of the main break with a full head of stem, kicking 4 goals in a 15 minute devastating period of football. The Blues looked rudderless for that 15 minutes. However the experience of Northway, Boylan, Burmiester, Ellis, and the discipline of Scicluna Dewar and Oliver steadied the team and two late goals from Rick Ellis saw the team take a narrow margin into the final stanza. Highlight of the quarter was Josh Taylor’s work rate in amassing 10 possessions for the quarter and his defensive running.

A spot in the Grand Final was on the line as the teams lined up to face each other for the final quarter. The final 30 minutes would belong to the PAFC boys with a 6 goal to nil quarter. Michael Boylan moved into the ruck to replace De La Cruz who had rucked tirelessly against all comers over the first 3 quarters. Boylan gave an immediate boost to the on ball team and the flood gates opened wide. There were some long goals kicked. Among them a long bomb from Walford who had laboured significantly for the team for the duration of the game. However the highlight of the quarter was the long bomb from the flank by Nathan Costin who followed up with another soon after.

This is a great result for the reserves, who now have a week off before playing in a Grand final.

Prahran Assumption 3 - 0 7 - 8 9 - 8 15 - 14 - 104

A 12 goal final round win was a telling statement from the Blues combine intent on going through the season undefeated.
Only Banyule in Division 1 and Prahran Assumption have gone through the preliminaries without a loss.
With a final five in Division 3, Prahran Assumption will have a week off before tackling the winner of Yarra Valley v Ivanhoe in a second semi-final clash.
For the first time for several weeks Prahran Assumption was on song for most of the game in a sign of the team going into finals mode.
The Blues won each quarter with a four goal unanswered last quarter spurt from Ivanhoe a rare blot on the day.
Highlight of Saturday’s win was 8-0 from full-forward Peter Cristoforo as the Blues tuned up for September.
Ivanhoe’s Ryan Close was almost as dominant booting seven from full-forward.
Dominant for Prahran Assumption were Cristoforo, Ben Furness, who flew in from business commitments from Adelaide and Josh Chapman back after a four weeks absence while Dan James in his 100th game kicked a goal.
In the Reserves, team of the decade captain, Leigh Northway made a welcome return after eight weeks with a serious knee injury.
Add Isaac Edmonds who is due to return after a hamstring strain, and defender Ed MacDonald who is fit again after an ankle injury and selectors face some tough choices in two weeks time.

Scott Adamson strong in defence all day for the Combine on Saturday against Albert Park

WITH  one round remaining before the finals series, unbeaten Prahran Assumption was expected to romp home against middle-of-the-ladder Albert Park at Toorak Park on Saturday.
So imagine the surprise of luncheon guests, who had listened to some entertaining tales from triple Carlton premiership player Jim Buckley,  when they emerged from the Charles Lux pavilion half-way through the first quarter to see a scoreline Albert Park 5-1 to Prahran Assumption 1-1.
But normal order was restored after the quarter time break.
A 6-2 second term while holding Albert Park scoreless was evidence why Prahran Assumption is now undefeated after 17 rounds in the VAFA Division 3.
Prahran Assumption kicked eight unanswered goals in the second and third quarters before Albert Park goaled late in the third term.
Captain Adam Sleight, who had  put on a marking clinic, promptly booted three of his six goals in time-on to take control at the three quarter-time break.  Sleight now has 71 goals for the season, an outstanding effort from centre half-forward.
In a patchy team performance, key defender Jack Matherson was steady all day while Scott Adamson was as hard at the ball as ever and clean with his disposal by hand and foot.
Next Saturday the Blues combine face fellow finalist Ivanhoe in what shapes as a testing prelude to September.
Key players in full-forward Peter Cristoforo, centre half-back ‘Scuba’ McIntyre, former captain Leigh Northway and on-baller Josh Chapman are to set return next week as competition for places hots up.

James Muster driving the Combine into attack against Mt Lilydale

PRAHRAN Assumption has overcome all manner of hurdles to maintain its unbeaten run of 16 wins in VAFA Division 3 and on Saturday it was the Mt Lilydale quagmire.
Coach Leigh Stafford described ground conditions as the worst he has seen.
“The mud was so thick.. you just couldn’t run, I’ve never seen anything like it,’’ he said.
Needless to say the unique conditions suited the home side, last on the ladder but with four wins to their credit.
The Blues went into the half-time break with a slender two point lead which warranted a blast from Stafford.
“We played like millionaires. I read the riot act and they responded well,’’ he said.
Half-way through the third quarter and Mt Lilydale was in front as prospects of a monumental upset loomed.
But captain Adam Sleight stepped up to the plate. Six goals for the match, and four in last quarter and a half sealed the result.
“He took over and turned the game,’’ Stafford said.
Sleight has kicked 65 goals in a stellar season from centre half-forward.
True to the season long trend Prahran Assumption dominated the last quarter with five goals to none.
The defence stood up well led by Daniel Bourke, ‘Scuba’ McIntyre, Scott Adamson while Joshua Ancrum stood up and Ryan Costin earned plaudits for a tagging role.
Blayne Dempsey, outstanding in defence all season, returned from an overseas holiday to dominate in the Reserves and earn a senior recall next week for the final home game of the season.

Seniors V Elsternwick

Jack Matherson among the best on Saturday in his 100th senior game for the Two Blues

THE challenges seem never ending but top-of-the-ladder Prahran Assumption continued on its unbeaten streak in VAFA Division 3 on Saturday.
After two hard fought, narrow wins against top four teams Yarra Valley and Monash Gryphons in recent weeks, the Blues combined faced a resurgent Elsternwick at its ‘postage stamp’ ground on Saturday.
After a slow start Elsternwick had won six of its past seven games, the only defeat at the hands of second placed Yarra Valley.
Prahran Assumption bounced out of the blocks with an eight goals to four first quarter kicking with the aid of a breeze .

But Prahran Assumption found the going tougher in the second quarter with Elsternwick narrowing the gap to 13 points thanks mainly to full-forward Justin Hunter.
A turning point proved to be the move of 100 games player Jack Matherson onto Hunter, restricting him to just two more goals.
A half-time ‘spray’ from coach Leigh Stafford had the desired effect with the margin 36 points by three quarter-time.
Despite kicking against the breeze in the last quarter the Blues were unstoppable restricting the home team to one goal, continuing a trend of strong finishes and make it 14 wins in a row.
For the Blues key forward Travis Edmonds followed his top game last week with five goals and best afield honours.
Triple Carlton premiership player Jim Buckley will guest speaker at Prahran Assumption’s final home of the season on Saturday week. Cost $20 for a two course lunch, bookings with Rob Wetherall 0421 616 990.

Undefeated OMs Undo Two Blues finals hopes.

Prahran Assumption 6.9-45 def by Old Melburnians 7.13-55
Goals: Faz 2, Andre Pitts 2, Coops, Stores
Best: Stores, “Don’t Argue with Andre” Pitts, Killer, Morto, Crispy, Pommy Adam

In a tight contest, Prahran Assumption battled bravely against the competition’s only undefeated side but finally went down by 10 points to OMs in the final game of the home and away season.

As a result, we dropped out of the 4 and saw “the blokes that couldn’t into Melbourne Uni” sneak into the finals. The fact that we beat Monash Blues twice during the year hurts a bit.

Although disappointing to miss finals, it has been a successful year in many respects and we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that the PAFC Clubbies exist to put a team of blokes on the park (we had over 45 players turn out for the Clubbies over the course of the season), to play and enjoy their football with all the mateship and camaraderie that comes with that. The Clubbies is about much more than winning and losing (although winning is always nice). It’s about enjoying our footy with our mates. We are lucky to what we have. With the help of the PAFC, long may it continue.

Although our season has reached an end, the senior and reserves continue to dominate their competitions. There are 3 games left of the regular season before finals, and I’m sure they’d appreciate having supporters along to cheer them on. Quite a few of the clubbies have had a run in the reserves which gives us an extra reason to cheer them on. The boys are away to Lilydale next week but are back at Toorak Park the week after on 13 August.

Well done to those lads who attended the PAFC Gala Event on Saturday. All reports from the night have been positive and it was good to have a good size Clubbie contingent present. In the next month or so there are some more PAFC events including a luncheon with Jim Buckley, the 1 to 1000 draw and also our club B & F function (it’s a bit like the one Killer hosts at Byron each year but without the much prized laminated awards.) Get along and attend if you can. Check out the Club’s website at http://www.prahranfootball.org.au/ for more details.

As for the game, team selection was usual mix of ins and outs. Albury’s finest Gowy was struggling with “Man-flu”.  EveryoneLovesBorbywood was on a trip up North and was unavailable. Nigel was still recovering from last week’s game on a trip out West and couldn’t make it. And Lewie must have been on some sort of trip after all the ranting and raving about Cadel Evans winning the Tour de France and it being the best Australian Sporting moment ever, that he is best Aussie Sportsman ever, that the selectors should have had C. Evans coming in at number 3 and pushed D. Bradman down the order, that C. Evans would have beaten Phar Lap over the 2 mile, that C. Evans should come to Richmond and push Jack Riewoldt out to the half forward line, that C. Evans should replace M. Malthouse at the Pies and send FIGJAM back to the Brissie Bears and that only C. Evans could play in the middle for the Clubbies and take umpire votes off Stores. Must have been some trip he was on. He also had a dodgy hammy and helped out on the boards while Pistol was still celebrating C. Evans victory on the tour while interstate (and what goes on the de Tour stays on de Tour).

As usual, there were a number of surprise inclusions. For the big game, the big men were back with Jumpin’ Geoff overcoming a shoulder complaint and Pommy Adam returning after a fine spell dominating the reserves. Coops was back after his 5 weeks cooped up in the sinbin for walloping a St Bee’s mug that was just asking for it. One Bearded Johnny was back from his overseas altitude camp. Screech and Morto had both returned after time out with the dreaded Clubbie soft tissue injury.

Wasn’t it great to have Rampaging Roy Slavin and YouSayDerbsISayDarbs back at the Clubbies after a couple of seasons carving a swathe through several continents. After being back in town for only a few days, and even before the spray tan had time to set, the boys were both back on the park playing footy for the Two Blues. Welcome back lads.

Returning after fine debuts last week were WheresWilWalford and “Don’t Argue with Andre” Pitts.

Calling correctly, wrinkle free Skipper Storeshad us kicking with a strong breeze in the first stanza. It was all one way traffic as the 2Blues were winning out of themiddle with Con, Stores, Pommy Adam andDirker Mitchell getting the ball forward. But we were falling down up forward as OMs flooded back making life difficult for the Pigeon Coop forward line.

“Don’t Argue with Andre” had the ball on a string, was dishing out “don’t argues” and snatched a ball from a stoppage, threw it on his boot for a fine goal. Another goal by “Don’t Argue with Andre” and then by Faz a few minutes later, had the boys in Blue and Blue with their tales up.

But we were unable to fully capitalise on our dominance and inside 50 entries. OM were disciplined in playing stoppage football, forcing us wide and frustrating s us into spraying the ball wide and kicking to packs. As it turned out, and as Lewie described in his post match media conference, this was the key moment of the game where we didn’t make the most of our opportunities to put the gamealmost out of their reach. AsLewie said “ If only Cadel was there...”

Down back, WheresWilWalford found plenty of goodWill amongst his back half crew. They were trying to FreeWillyup to be the 3rd man up at contests.  Willy, Crispy, Jimmy, Cottsy, Gowy, Jumpin Jimmy, One Bearded Johnny, and every other player with a nick name ending in “y” were contributing. Well done lads as we held OMs goalless for the quarter and both thwarted their attacks but also provided offensive drive to the PAFC side.

We were 3 goals up at the first orange break and it looked like we were flying.

But things turned in the second quarter. The first 15 minutes were a real battle with OMs peppering the goals but our backs were holding sway over the contest. But as we have seen on a few occasions during the season, a 10 minute lapse very quickly sees the game slip through our fingers. A five goal burst by OMs really rocked us. They were winning the ball out of the middle and were kicking goals from 40 or 50 out with the wind at their backs. Our defenders did a fine job 1:1 but it was often their mids running hard and spreading from stoppages that managed to find time and space to kick running goals.

At the other end of the ground, we just couldn’t make inroads. We had some shots but with the strong breeze in our face it was always going to be a struggle. With a few of our forwards a bit underdone after being out for a few matches, things didn’t click at all for the 2Blu forwards. On the other hand, OMs constantlyswitched the play and rebounded from the back half with accuracy and really demonstrated why they sit top of the ladder.

At the long break we were 3 goals down and OMs had all the momentum.

Faz urged the boys to lift, to run and play for our season. And the boys came out pumped and with the wind at our backs. We wrestled control in the middle with Jumpin’ Jeff and PA winning the tapouts to advantage. Killer and “Don’t Argue with Andre”damaging on the wings. Roy in the midfield and Derbs in the back half were finding their touch. Lukey Gee was doing a fine shutdown job. Screech was pushed back to swap with Winifred who became a strong target up forward while Jackoplayed key role plugging holes across CHB . Stores and Con were winning both inside contested ball as well proving plenty of run and carry.

Pigeon and Coops flew in confined conditions and almost clunked some beauties but OMs seemed content to again flood back, take space and make life difficult. The fact that none of our key forwards kicked a major until that point showed how tight and tough OMs were.

Faz snaffled a major but again we could have done more with our opportunities. OMs did push forward and kicked a goal but seemed content to play with a more defensive mindset against the breeze.

At the final break, we were 3 goals down kicking against a strong breeze and the undefeated team in our comp. Many sides may have thrown in the towel and gone through the motions. But credit to the PAFC Clubbies the boys came out and really took it up to OMs.

It started again in the middle where Skipper Stores took his game to a new level as he contested, tackled, smothered and worked tirelessly. Con, Faz, Killer and Nick Mitchell drove us forward. Our back 6, like it has been all year, was our rock and provided some key run despite the punishing breeze.

We managed to put some key scoreboard pressure on OMs with a fine goal by Coops and then one by Stores to put us within 4 points with only a few minutes left. But again is was the well drilled OMs who took their opportunities with a loose ball get to hit their hotspot and resulted in a scratchy goal that pushed the margin out to the final winning margin of 10 points.

Post game, it was a somewhat dejected TwoBlue outfit that trudged back to the changerooms as LewieLewie crossed “being a lollypop man” off his bucket list by stopping traffic.

I wished I’d been there as Faz and Stores spoke about the year gone, the successes and the struggles and the thanks for all those that made the year possible. And I’m sure they spoke about the plan that we’ll be back again next year to take the next step to finals and then to a 1st Divvy Club XVIII flag.

Seniors V West Brunswick

UNDEFEATED Prahran-Assumption versus cellar dweller West Brunswick was always going to be a mis-match on ladder positions.

But with the Blues missing up to eight regulars through injury and unavailability and coming off the back of two titanic, narrow wins there was always a hint of a let down and a possible upset in VAFA Division 3 at Toorak Park last Saturday.

Yet by half-time it was game over. Prahran Assumption had established a 63 point lead which was extended to 81 by final siren time.

The tone was set in the first 30 seconds when captain Adam Sleight goaled. The Blues constantly attacked through a dominant half-back line and hitting targets opened a six goal lead at quarter time.

The 100 point winning target set by coach Leigh Stafford wasn’t reached but nonetheless it was a comprehensive win.

While Matt Pell, moved from wing to half-forward and full-forward Peter Cristoforo each booted five goals the dominant forward was Travis Edmunds who was a constant leading target.

In defence veteran full-back Michael Scicluna succumbed to a hamstring injury in his first contest causing a re-cast defence.

Dan James didn’t miss a beat as stand-in full back while Jack Matherson was dominant in his 99th senior game.

Adam Hall in his first game as a wing/half forward made an impact and put himself in calculations for finals selection.

Reserves v West Brunswick

Matt Sampson drives the combine into attack on the weekend.

The Prahran Assumption reserves maintained top spot with a hard fought and thrilling battle with the West Brunswick Magpies. The Magpies opened the scoring and were two goals up before the two blues had scored. The blues recovered and regained the lead by quarter time by 2 points. The match was a great contest with the lead changing several times throughout the day. The last quarter proved to be a dogged affair with neither side backing down. The result went down to the wire with the Westies kicking ahead by 2 points with two minutes to go. However not to be deterred Adam Ballard in the ruck playing his first game for the reserves won the tap out and the ball went forward, all players desperate at the contest. Tully Anders swooped on the ball and with great blocking from his teammates kicked the goal that would win the match for the combine by 4 points. A well earned win against an worthy opponent.
Ballard was best on ground in the ruck, Dewar was a rock in defense and Oliver, Naughtin and Pitts were mighty workers on ball. Haynes and Field played strongly in a number of positions, while Ellis, Greenham and Rice were energetic and accurate up forward.
Next week Prahran Assumption take on Elsternwick at Elsternwick.

Seniors V Monash Gryphons

Blayne Dempsey marks strongly against Monash on Saturday

DEFYING a growing injury toll, Prahran Assumption extended its unbeaten winning streak to 13 with a gritty four point win over Monash Gryphons in VAFA Division 3 on Saturday.
With seven players missing from the team that heroically accounted for second placed Yarra Valley at Toorak Park the previous Saturday, the away clash against third placed Monash Gryphons to beat the ‘unlucky 13 hoodoo’was always going to be tough going.
And so it proved.
The biggest lead for the day was Prahran Assumption’s 19 point break at half-time, but the hosts had 10 scoring shots to nine in a sign there was little between the two teams.
After a goalless second quarter Monash Gryphons booted five goals in the third quarter to narrow the gap to six points and set the scene for a thrilling last quarter.
First gamer Clint Pepperill marked and goaled early in the last term before Monash quickly replied which set the trend for the quarter.
Every goal the Blues scored was quickly matched and going into time-on the gap was just five points before a Pepperill snap seemed to make the game safe.
But within 30 seconds Monash replied and it was game on again.
The steadiness of veteran Michael Scicluna in the last line of defence proved crucial when he started a chain of disposals that ended with a strong mark and goal by Edmonds to make the game safe.
A Monash goal after the siren narrowed the gap to four points.
Coach Leigh Stafford was full of praise for the players who stepped up from the Reserves and singled out Nathan Costin’s last quarter, Troy Booth and first gamer Pepperill’s four goals.
Again ruckman Aaron O’Hare was tireless in big man duels and defender Blayne Dempsey’s class shone out in a desperate last quarter.
Dempsey will be overseas on a holiday for the next three weeks testing the Blues depth yet again with more than 10 regular senior players on the sidelines.
Stafford said players should be proud of their effort to maintain their unbeaten record as they prepare for the finals.

Reserves v Monash Gryphons

Alister Naughton breaking clear against Monash Gryphons

The Reserves won a tough contest at East Caulfied Reserve on Saturday against the Monash Gryphons. With eight players missing from the team that beat Yarra Valley the week before the twos knew that they were in for a huge challenge this week.
With scores level at quarter time, the two blues were held goal less in the second quarter while Monash established a 15 point lead.
Reorganized and reminded of what was necessary at half time by Coach Robert Oliver the Two Blues came out firing and were back in front by five points at the last change. The stage was set for a thrilling last quarter. The combine with only a two man bench through injury lost a third early in the last term. A classic battle ensued between two worthy opponents with the Prahran boys coming out on top by 13 points thanks to late goals by Ellis and Haynes.
John Dewar was judged best for Prahran with his dash from defense over 4 quarters. Adam Hall and Alister Naughtin were tireless on ball and great contributors all day. Boylan, Burke and Ellis were solid in attack.

Seniors v Yarra Valley

Paul Donahoo in the thick of the action against Yarra Valley

STILL undefeated, but tested to the limit and with some wounded soldiers.
That was the post mortem from a torrid clash between top VAFA Division 3 teams Prahran Assumption and Yarra Valley at Toorak Park on Saturday.
In what surely will be a grand final preview, Prahran Assumption triumphed by nine points to make it 12 wins on the trot after a round one two point margin.
But it was tough going with the Blues down to one man on the bench early in the second quarter after Ryan Costin was knocked unconscious in the first 10 minutes and Tim Maya and Peter Cristoforo succumbed to hamstring injuries.
With  on-baller Paul Donahoo severely hampered by a shoulder injury it was a battle of attrition in the most severe test for the team since round one.
Given the injury list coach Leigh Stafford described the win as gutsy.
“There was no stand out player yet everyone did their job. Now we can prepare for the second semi-final,’’ he said.
Stafford singled out Michael Bremner’s role up forward for special praise and former Under 19s ruckman Aaron O’Hare who sealed the game with a mark and goal in the last quarter.
Stafford said there would be at least six forced changes for next week’s clash with Monash Gryphons which will test the club’s depth which seems strong after the Reserves scored a tenth successive win.
Saturday’s match was always going to be an arm wrestle and a low scoring first quarter set the scene.
After Yarra Valley led by seven points at quarter time Prahran Assumption kicked four goals to one in the second term to open a handy 15 point lead.
The Blues kept the same margin at three quarter-time in a tense, high pressure battle.
After kicking the first goal of the last quarter it seemed Prahran Assumption had the game in its keeping.
But not to be denied Yarra Valley slammed on the next four goals to take the lead by three points.
Adam Sleight, who had been well held, marked and goaled to regain the lead then Dan James marked and goaled before fellow ruckman O'Hare hauled in a mark to kick the sealer.

Matt Pell crashing through for the Combine against Albert Park

UNDEFEATED PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION tuned up for its probable grand final VAFA Division 3 preview clash with second placed Yarra Valley with a regulation 96 point win over Albert Park on Saturday.
A first round three point win by Prahran Assumption in enemy territory has set up the clash with Yarra Valley at Toorak Park next Saturday.
No team has been as close to toppling Prahran Assumption since as they have embarked on an 11 win streak boasting the best percentage in all grades of the competiton.
No doubt coach Leigh Stafford will remind his players of that away win against the odds kicking into a breeze in the last quarter which has defined the season to date.
Last Saturday yet again competition leading goal kickers , key forwards Adam Sleight and Peter Cristoforo were dominant contributing nine  of the 21 goals scored.
Cristoforo with five goals now has 49 for the season and Sleight’s four goal haul boosted his tally to 46 for the pair to top the goal kicking in VAFA Division 3.
Cristoforo gave supporters a reminder of his skills with a Peter Daicos like banana goal in the last quarter.
The Blues combine struggled to cope with the strong cross wind early in the match with just a nine point 2-6 to 1-3 quarter time lead in a scrappy start to the match.
But a 14 goal to four second half told of the combine’s dominance.
Defenders Scott McIntyre, Ben Furness, Scott Adamson and Blayne Dempsey were again dominant.

Reserves

Prahran Assumption 30 -18 -198 D Albert Park 1 - 3 - 9

The Reserves produced their best 4 quarter effort for the season on Saturday against Albert Park. Playing against a determined opponent the team managed to stifle their opponent and provide the team with many scoring opportunities.
With De La Cruz again leading from the front in the ruck and Pell, Field, Hall and Bremner winning many possessions between them the Bankers defence was under seige from the first bounce.
Pepperill was proving a headache for his opponent finishing the match with 8 goals earning him a best on ground performance.
Tom Candy and John Rice showed lively performances contributing 9 goals between them.
A major highlight of the game was the long bomb goal of Rob Scott, kicked after a strong mark. His first kick with the Reserves!
The defence again showed their usual solid strength and unity in a 4 quarter effort.
This week PAFC takes on Yarra Valley in a top of the table clash at Toorak Park in what is sure to be a great match.

CLUB XVIII

The Club XVIII side took on co-tenants De La Salle in an important 3rd vs 4th clash to cement a spot in the top four. Unfortunately the Two Blues boys did not come to play and were soundly beaten in a game they should have won.

The Two Blues failed to take advantage of a strong Darling Park breeze in the first quarter and were a goal down at the first break. De La Salle came out strongly after quarter time and took a four-goal lead in to half-time, which Prahran Assumption were never able to recover from.

In a game with few highlights for Prahran Assumption, international recruit Adam Ballard battled hard all day in the ruck, while Peter Cotter and Jarrad Belcher put in strong efforts in the backline.

This week sees the Two Blues take on Old Ivanhoe at Darling Park in another must-win game. Finals remain a possibility but hard work and an improvement in output will be required over the last four rounds.

Adam Sleight in action. Kicked 10 gaols in the second half against Mt Lilydale on Saturday.

Seniors

ADAM Sleight surely created a record with his career best 10 goal haul for Prahran Assumption at Toorak Park on Saturday.
At half-time the leading centre half-forward in the VAFA Division 3 competition’s  goal tally was a blank. He then booted five goals in the third quarter and followed up with a further five in the last to reach the perfect 10.
Sleight’s goal fest was the highlight of a rout with the Blues combine annihilating Mt Lilydale by 162 points. Mt Lilydale managed a paltry two goals for the day with Prahran booting eight goals in each of the last three quarters.
Despite the mammoth margin coach Leigh Stafford was far from satisfied.
“We set out to play four good quarters and played two and a half. ‘’
“The theme of the day was to improve every week leading into the finals,’’ he said.
Prahran Assumption is the only unbeaten team after 10 rounds with a two game gap to second placed Yarra Valley.
Stafford said he was most encouraged by the progress of some of the younger players.
“Ryan Costin was good, Lachie Oliver played a role in mid-field and Nathan Costin kicked four goals.’’
Competition for spots in the team is hot with two players due to be demoted next week with regulars Tim Maya and Ed Macdonald ready to resume after injury.
Before the game supporters were treated to a luncheon featuring three Carlton premiership players Ian Robertson, Syd Jackson and Denis Munari.
Prahran’s next game is away against Albert Park.

Prahran Assumption Reserves Win Big

The PAFC reserves recorded a huge 153 point win against Mt Lilydale on Saturday.
The match played in great conditions at Toorak Park saw the Two Blues launch into a 5 goal to 1 first quarter. With De La Cruz dominating the ruck contests and onballers Pitt and Booth racking up possessions the Mounties were looking down the barrel.
In defence Stewart, Boylan and Dewar were impassable aided and abetted by Pepperill at centre half back. Pepperill moved in to the ruck in the second quarter and the two blues piled on 7 more goals to a handy lead at half time.
The third quarter saw more of the same with Pell and Fields gaining many possessions and a quarter highlight was the long running 50m goal from ruckman De La Cruz.
The forward line was in fine form with Haynes contesting strongly and finishing with 2, while Burke was a great target up forward setting up many chances for other players. Rick Ellis at full forward finished with 5 and his bustling work set up openings for others. Zayler and Candy, products of the Prahran Juniors, were also strong contributors.
Next week the PAFC takes on Albert Park at Oval 20 Albert Park at 11.40am

Dan James leading from the front in a tough encounter with Ivanhoe

SUPERIOR fitness has been a cornerstone of Prahran Assumption’s dominance of VAFA Division 3 this season and it came to the fore again at Toorak Park on Saturday.
Fourth placed Ivanhoe tested the Blues early and had seven scoring shots to four in the first quarter to trail by just two points.
A five goals to two second quarter with the aid of the breeze gave the combine a 23 point half-time lead but it was far from one-way traffic.
Ivanhoe flooded the backline and double teamed key forwards Adam Sleight and Peter Cristoforo, frustrating the home side. Despite the close attention Cristoforo took the mark of the match and duly slotted one of his two goals for the quarter.
But kicking against the breeze in the third term Prahran Assumption blew the game apart adding six goals to one, running its opponents into the ground to retain an unbeaten record.
A highlight of the quarter was a Tim Maya smother on the half-forward flank and a pass to Pell for a goal.
Unfortunately Maya will be sidelined for some weeks with a hamstring injury while forward Matt Sheen , who kicked two goals, was another casualty. Sheen has a possible ACL knee injury which could sideline him for much of the season.
Prahran Assumption’s defence was again mean with Blayne Dempsey a stand-out across half-back in his best season to date.
Meanwhile centre half-forward Adam Sleight and on-baller Ash Parsons are the club’s selections in the VAFA C-D Grade representative team to play the VCFL at Shepparton on July 9.
But the match is on the same day as the top-of-the-ladder clash with Yarra Valley.  Representing the VAFA is not compulsory so it will be interesting to note the plans of  the nominated players of both clubs.
Prahran has another home game next Saturday v Mt Lilydale.
Ian Robertson, the former Carlton premiership player and Channel 7 commentator will be guest speaker at the pre game luncheon.

RESERVES

The two blues had a convincing win against Ivanhoe. In a spirited first quarter Prahran Assumption kicked 6 goals and held their opponents scoreless. With Delacruz the dominant ruckman on the ground and supported by Oliver, Hall and Booth there was a steady supply of opportunity for the forwards. As the match progressed the defence was able to become more attacking and not only repelled Ivanhoes desparate attacks but started a number of their own. Scicluna, Stewart, Pell and Pepperill were impassable. Bourke and Haynes were contesting strongly in the air and providing openings for Rice, Candy and Burmeister to goal. Rick Ellis up forward kicked 4 and set up his teamates with 4 more.

Next week the Two Blues take on the Mountain Men from Lilydale at Toorak Park at 11.40am.

CLUB XVIII

The thirds travelled to Essendon (the longest road trip in Club XVIII)
to take on lowly St Bernards who are yet to record a win. The game
started well for the Two Blues and Trav Jackson and Sam Cooper were both
providing lofty marking targets up forward. After taking a handy lead
into the quarter time break, Prahran came out in the second quarter and
piled on 8 goals to a point in the most cohesive display of team
football they have put on all year. This quarter was marred by the
report of Coops for striking and a date at the tribunal awaits. The Two
Blues took a while to switch back on after the ensuing interruption and
let the Bernards boys back into the game in the second half before
re-gaining momentum and finishing the game off strongly. Jason Storer
led from the front and put in a solid forward-line performance including
some of the best U-turns in the business, while Brett Lewis, Con Faraci
and Nick Keohler set the tone for the win across the mid-field. Benny
Allen was a great inclusion from the two's and chipped in with a couple
of late goals to seal a big win.

With a big month of footy ahead for the thirds, a spot in the four
awaits - we are now fifth and a few percentage points out. With renewed
commitment and a focus on the second half of the year finals are now
sharply in focus. Next week we are home (at Darling Park) vs Monash
Blues in the early game (9.20am). Competition for places in the side is
heating right up so training is a must for all players.

Prahran Assumption Makes It Eight in a Row

Aaron O'Hare one of Prahran Assumption's best on Saturday.

A second quarter eight goal blitz underpinned Prahran Assumption’s eighth successive win against a determined Power House at Ross Gregory Oval on Saturday.
Coach Leigh Stafford said the 28 point win pleased him considering early injuries to Ed Macdonald (hamstring) and Leigh Northway (knee).
“They had bigger bodies which suited them on the smaller ground.’’
“I was as happy as I’ve been for a few weeks. We’ve got five players to come back in so we’ve got some interesting selections to make.’’
Power House led by 15 points at quarter time after kicking with the breeze but Prahran Assumption took charge in the second quarter. A rush of five goals in time-on of the second term proved crucial.
Inaccurate kicking cost the Blues combine in the third quarter when a return of 1-8 kept Power House in the game.
Stafford was forced to reshuffle the forward line when last week’s 10 goals hero Pete Cristoforo found goals hard to get and was moved to the wing.
Tim Maya kicked the only goal in the first and third quarters, while in defence Scott Adamson held sway over former Fitzroy player  John Rombotis, Scott McIntye and Blayne Dempsey  was again sound in defence.
Undefeated Prahran Assumption now heads for the Queen’s Birthday break on top of the VAFA Division 3 ladder with the next match at Toorak Park on Saturday week June 18.

Prahran Assumption Reserves Make it Six in a Row

The Reserves made it six in a row on Saturday with a solid win over Powerhouse. The first quarter saw both teams locked in a tight struggle. The Two Blues being pressured into inaccuracy in front of goal. The second quarter saw the Blues take off with a 7 goal to none quarter. With Clint Pepperill having an outstanding game on ball and the forwards lapping up the chances provided. Haynes kicking 4 goals in this quarter, and six for the match, leading strongly and bringing other players into the contest. The third quarter saw the House come back strongly and outscore the Blues. However the team rallied in the last and piled on six goals to finish with a good win. The defense again did an outstanding job led by Stewart, Scicluna and Dewar, while on ball Booth, Pell and Hall were four quarter contributors. Up forward Haynes, Burke, Candy and Brooks were excellent contributors to a great team effort.

Prahran Assumption's Football Club's Community Sports Program in it's 11th Year

PRAHRAN Assumption Football Club's Community Sport Program will continue into its 11th year of participation in the local community in 2011.
Thanks to the generous support of the Bendigpo Bank East Malvern Community Bank Branch, the CSP continues to serve local school children.
The CSP evolved in 2000 under the management of Derek Hine, a former club coach and now National Recruiting Manager at reigning AFL Premier Club Collingwood.
Again a major clinic in the second term of school holidays in June is planned for Toorak Park.
The event will be supported by the Stonnington City Council Teenage Holiday program.
Dale Tapping, former Prahran 1987 premiership player and coach of Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup, will again be program manager assisted by senior Prahran player Steve Zayler and Dragons players.
Children from the Horace Petty Adventure Playground Housing Estate will join in the program.
Schools taking part in the CSP this year are:
South Yarra Primary
St Rochs Primary
St Josephs Primary
Currajong Special Needs
Toorak Primary
Stonnington Primary

The Prahran Assumption boys made it a three-win weekend with victories in all teams.
The Seniors and the Reserves both had hard fought victories against a dogged opponent in West Brunswick, while the Club XVIII got back on the winning list against De La Salle at Darling Park.

Peter Cristoforo in action

Seniors

A season high 10 goal haul by spearhead Peter Cristoforo highlighted Prahran Assumption’s seventh successive win in Division 3 of the VAFA on Saturday.
Cristoforo kicked two goals in the opening term, three in the second and third quarters and added a further two in the final stanza.
The goal spree boosted his season tally to a competition high 34 and overtake teammate Adam Sleight on 30 goals.
Coach Leigh Stafford said there was considerable merit in the 54 point win over a competitive West Brunswick which maintained the Blues unbeaten season.
After Prahran Assumption dominated the first half with a 8-11 to 2-4 scoreline and then kicked the first three goals in the third quarter  West Brunswick struck back.
The Magpies added six goals to outscore the Blues in the third quarter.
“We were a lot more consistent than last week. We wasted chances in the first half, but the opposition tackling and pressure was good,’’ he said.
Cristoforo and Sleight kicked 14 of the 17 goals between them but Matt Sheen with the first goal of the game was also a constant threat up forward.
Ruckman Aaron O’Hare scored a rare goal in the first quarter much to his delight.

Next week Prahran Assumption visits Power House at the Ross Gregory Oval.

The twos made it five in a row with a good win over West Brunswick. The two blues started the match with a strong first quarter kicking 4 goals to 1 in slippery conditions at Ransford Oval, the on-ballers and centre line players providing many opportunities for the forwards. After quarter time however the next two quarters became a dour struggle with both sides managing only 2 goals. The final quarter saw the Magpies throw everything at the two blues kicking 2 quick goals. However the defense rallied and supplied a much-needed lift as goals from Ellis, Rice and Hall sealed the victory.
Ellis finished with 3 while Oliver and Costin led the best players on ball, Scicluna, Dewar, Pell and Field had terrific games in defence.

PRAHRAN Assumption Continues on its Winning Way

PRAHRAN Assumption continued on its winning way to extend its unbeaten run to six wins against an under manned Kew at Toorak Park on Saturday.

But coach Leigh Stafford was far from satisfied despite the 77 point win.

Wins have been rare in recent seasons so it’s hard to knock an unbeaten start to the year in VAFA Division 3 but Stafford saw some worrying signs.

After an impressive 9-5 to 1-2 opening quarter kicking with a stiff northerly wind, the Two Blues combine struggled to get cohesion into its game.

Stafford was critical of his players straying from team rules but credit to Kew who put numbers behind the ball and clogged space.

Kew had up to eight regulars out but tested Prahran Assumption with its pressure and had an edge in height regularly out marking the Blues.

The first quarter set the pattern for the day.

Prahran Assumption was fast out of the blocks kicking four goals in the first six minutes. After that the Blues slackened and Kew held its own. But an avalanche of four more goals in time-on all but iced the result.

Again shining lights for the Blues were on-ballers James Musster with his electrifying pace and Paul Donahoo and Josh Chapman who again excelled in hard-ball-gets.

Up forward Adam Sleight bagged another four goals to lead the competition with 26 majors for the season.

Full-forward Pete Cristoforo kicked three but missed several chances to double that tally.

In defence Blayne Dempsey was again a stand-out.

Matt Sheen kicked an early goal and showed encouraging signs in his first senior game after playing his junior football at Prahran.

Prahran Assumption plays West Brunswick away next Saturday.

Melbourne Storm Players Tackle Prahran Assumption

Melbourne Storm Players, Ryan Hinchcliffe and Bryan Norrie visited training this week and took the team for a spirited training session. They put the players through a tough tackling workout concentrating on technique and form. The players greatly appreciated the boys giving up their time and imparting their knowledge.

This week the the two blues take on Kew at Toorak Park on Saturday. The Reserves start at 11.40am while the Seniors starts at 2pm. The Club XVIII travel to Old Ivanhoe for an 11.40am start at Chelsworth Park.

Prahran Assumption Continues Its Winning Streak

PRAHRAN Assumption continued on its winning streak with a 103 point demolition of Elsternwick in heavy conditions at Toorak Park on Saturday.
After an early fright when Elsternwick stormed out of the blocks with the first two goals, the only unbeaten team in VAFA Division 3 again showed their class despite the trying conditions.
After an even first term when Prahran Assumption led by 12 points the Two Blues combine took the game by the throat kicking with the aid of a strong breeze in the second quarter booting 8-7 to 0-2.
On ballers Paul Donahoo and Josh Chapman revelled in the heavy conditions pumping the ball into the Two Blues forward line where Adam Sleight was again outstanding with three goals for the quarter.
The third quarter was a two-goals-each stalemate before Prahran Assumption again took control with a 6-4 to 0-2 last quarter. After a quiet first half, Matt Pell cashed in with three last quarter goals.
Pell was one of 10 goal kickers in an encouraging even spread.
Elsternwick was held goalless against the wind in both the second and final quarters with Ben Furness, Jack Matherson and Blayne Dempsey all but impassable.
Prahran Assumption again plays at home at Toorak Park next Saturday against Kew.

SPORTSBET.com.au, Prahran Assumption Football Club’s major corporate partner for 2011, is one of Australia’s great business success stories.

When Assumption College old boy Matthew Tripp paid $250,000 for Darwin-based bookmaker company Sportsbet.com.au in 2002, the company was on the edge of bankruptcy and had just eight staff.

In 2009 Tripp and his partners sold 39 per cent of Sportsbet.com.au to Irish bookmaker Paddy Power for $132m. Paddy Power purchased the remaining 61 per cent of Sportsbet earlier this year in a deal valuing the company at $338m with Tripp, 36, remaining the chief executive officer.

"We had one IT guy and a couple of phone operators and that was Sportsbet," Tripp says of the business he took over.

Since then, the company has grown to employ more than 250 staff, some 40 of whom are based in the Northern Territory, where bets must be struck under the terms of the company's gaming licence.

Last financial year Sportsbet.com.au turnover reached a staggering $2.95 billion in bets.

Sportsbet.com.au has ridden a wave of massive growth in phone-based and online wagering that has to a large extent replaced traditional racetrack-based bookies.

The PAFC is delighted to welcome Sportsbet which continues to flourish in the highly competitive sports betting industry under Tripp’s management.

Sportsbet replaces Reflections Group as our major corporate partner. We again thank Stephen Crewes for his many years association with the club.

Prahran Assumption sits alone at the top of the VAFA Division 3 Ladder

PRAHRAN Assumption sits alone at the top of the VAFA Division 3 ladder after a comprehensive 50 point trouncing of UHSVS in the top-of-the-ladder clash on Saturday.
After an entertaining and close first-half, Prahran Assumption's better work rate and speed were telling factors.
The only two unbeaten teams treated spectators to a high quality goal fest in the first quarter at Macalister Oval with UHSVS 7-1 to Prahran Assumption 6-2. With tough pocket Scott Adamson taken to hospital with concussion it promised to be a tough day at the office.
After the first quarter shoot-out the second term developed into an arm-wrestle with both defences locking down and at half-time Prahran Assumption 9-2 led UHSVS 8-4.
But after man-of-the-match Adam Sleight booted an early third quarter goal it was one-way traffic.
Prahran Assumption's pressure was relentless with Josh Chapman and Paul Donahoo dominating the stoppages and the speed of James Musster telling.
The Two Blues combine kicked 11 goals to three in the second-half with captain Sleight's career best eight goals from centre half-forward the stand-out performance. Sleight's high marking was almost faultless and his kicking for goal equally as impressive.
Blayne Dempsey was outstanding in defence with Jack Matherson, Stephen McIntyre, Ed Macdonald and Ben Furness complimenting his work.
Coach Leigh Stafford's move of Matherson to full-back on Rhys Kirk late in the first quarter proved crucial. After three first quarter goals Kirk threatened to be a match-winner but he failed to score a goal for the rest of the game.
Up forward Tim Maya was a livewire especially, early in the game, and with Luke Giansiracusa and Peter Cristoforo each kicked three goals.
while the move of Jack Matherson to full-back on Rhys Kirk late in the first quarter was also crucial.
Prahran Assumption now has the bonus of successive home games at Toorak Park.

Prahran Football Club Celebrates 125 Years in Style

Club legends- Jack Morgans, Kevin Sheedy and 1951 premiership captain and Team Of The Century captain Paddy Walsh with life member Leo Cronin far right

FROM the most famous son, Kevin Sheedy, to one of the oldest, 87 year-old Team Of The Century captain Paddy Walsh, the Prahran Football Club faithful celebrated the club's 125th anniversary in style at Toorak Park last Saturday night.
More than 170 former players, coaches and officials, supporters and present players and guests gathered at the Charles Lux Pavilion to reminisce about the glory days of the past.
The Prahran Assumption team in Division 3 of the VAFA won handsomely earlier in the day to set the tone for a great night.
The Prahran Football Club was formed in March 1886 so this year celebrates 125 years of the one of the oldest football clubs in Australia.
Sheedy flew down from Canberra after coaching Greater Western Sydney in a local NSW competition to pay homage to the club where he began his senior career as a 16 year-old before going onto his decorated playing and coaching career.
Premiership coaches Kevin Rose (1970, 73), Mick Erwin (1978) and Greg Hutchison (1987) were interviewed by compere, former player and now media performer Sam Pang.
Thanks go to organisers Paul "Squizzy'' Taylor, Luke Soulos, Robert Wetherall, Tod Mackay, Chris Garnaut, Tim Habel and Kristy Walford.

Two Blues Open Account in a Close One

The trip to Domeney Reserve has always been a difficult one to negotiate, and so it proved on Saturday when our senior side persevered their way to a 2 point victory in one of the more difficult assignments in D3 football this year.

Overcoming a 13 point deficit with 8 minutes to go was a huge character builder for the Two Blues in their first hitout as Prahran Assumption Football Club, and as far as team efforts go it was an exceptional one.

Although the Two Blues held the lead for the bulk of the day, the first two goals of the final stanza had the Bushrangers looking as though they were on song to open their account, but some inspirational football from a number of players including Josh Chapman, Jimmy Musster and Steve McIntyre lifted the Two Blues over the line.

Ash Parsons found his feet in the last quarter and his decisive delivery was important, while Adam Sleight and Pete Cristoforou stepped up to the plate with four goals each, with Sleight kicking the final two that saw the Two Blues get over the line.

This week Prahran faces promoted premier Monash Gryphons in another huge challenge for the club as it seeks to earn respect early in the 2011 season.

Prahran Assumption Finishes Pre-Season Strongly

Prahran Assumption rounded out its pre-season campaign with a solid 32 point victory over 2010 D3 Premier Latrobe Uni on the wide expanses of their huge ground.

In what was a very even team performance, the rigorous pre-season the club has gone through came to the fore as the Two Blues kicked the first four goals of the final quarter to ice the result and convert its dominance onto the scoreboard.

The reserves also recorded a solid five goal victory to finish their campaign, while the 3rd XVIII comprehensively outplayed Old Paradians at Binnak Park winning by in excess of 10 goals.

Competition for spots will be white hot going into Round One with at least ten more players available for selection this week, but it is a problem that we have worked hard to have and will only hold us in good stead as the season progresses.

It will be a marquee day for the football club next Saturday, as the Prarhan Assumption Football Club will take to Domeney Reserve in its first official hitout against likely D3 contender Yarra Valley.

All the hard work has been done, now the fun begins.

Two Blues in Good Practice Match Wins

A 100 point victory over Kew was the perfect remedy to a slightly disappointing loss against Williamstown YCW seven days before as Prahran Assumption Football Club’s second half blew the game apart.
Kew made a solid fist of the first half, where wasted opportunity was the order of the day but the PAFC turned the second half into a demonstration of the style of football it is aiming to achieve in 2011 by building on the 20 point half time margin.
The forward line kicked into gear in the second half with Adam Sleight taking over at Centre Half forward, creating space and opportunity for the likes of Isaac Edmunds (7 goals) and Mathew Pell (4 goals) to race away with the game.
On show was the team’s exemplary fitness level, with many players including the likes of John Dewar, Ben Furness, Michael Bremner and Lachlan Oliver putting their hands up for spots in the Round 1 line-up  as a result of committed pre-seasons and furthermore fantastic form on the paddock.
Paul Donahoo was busy on the ball along with Ash Wiggins, whose no goal return could just as easily have been five. Nick Brooks in the ruck was competitive and earned plenty of it until suffering a recurrence of his knee injury, which all at the Club are hoping is only a minor scare.
Attention now moves to our final hit out against Latrobe Uni this week at Bundoora before our tough first up assignment against Yarra Valley.

Match Reports

Seniors V Ivanhoe

Dan "buckets" James celebrates his 100 senior game for the PAFC in the last home and away game of the season. The two blues finishing on top undefeated.

AFTER 18 unbeaten home and away wins, let the finals begin!
That was the message from Prahran Assumption after a comprehensive win over third placed Ivanhoe in the final round of VAFA Division 3 on Saturday.

Seniors V Albert Park

Seniors V MT LILYDALE

PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 8-4 10-5 16- 12 22-14 (146)

PAFC ClubXVIII action

PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 3-1 6-3 9-5 13-7 (85)

We wont be beaten we hate to lose

Match Reports

Seniors V Ivanhoe

Dan "buckets" James celebrates his 100 senior game for the PAFC in the last home and away game of the season. The two blues finishing on top undefeated.

AFTER 18 unbeaten home and away wins, let the finals begin!
That was the message from Prahran Assumption after a comprehensive win over third placed Ivanhoe in the final round of VAFA Division 3 on Saturday.

Seniors V Albert Park

Seniors V MT LILYDALE

PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 8-4 10-5 16- 12 22-14 (146)

Club XVIII V Old Melburnians

PAFC ClubXVIII action

PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION 3-1 6-3 9-5 13-7 (85)

Best. O’Hare, Booth, Musster, Dempsey, Pepperill, Sleight, Scicluna.

PAFC takes on West Brunswick at Toorak Park next week at 11.40am

Theme Song

"Here come Prahran boys, here come the blues
We wont be beaten we hate to lose

We will beat them one and all
The bigger they are, the harder they fall

Whether the odds be great or be small
Gallant Prahran will win overall

You will hear the crowd all roaring
Com'on the mighty blues!
